Curriculum Intent

At Greyfriars, we have designed our curriculum around the needs of our children to ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive in a classroom environment! Our curriculum not only focuses on specific subject knowledge and skills but also provides children with opportunities to put these skills and knowledge into practice through what can be accessed through continuous provision time.

Our curriculum has been designed to ensure each and every child has every opportunity to belong to a caring community where they can enjoy their education and achieve their full potential! Our curriculum is bespoke to the needs of the pupils at Greyfriars Academy, not only focusing on specific subject knowledge, skills and understanding by providing opportunities for the children to develop personally, to equip them with the skills needed to become good citizens and make positive contributions to our future society. We are a busy town school in an area of deprivation. Our constantly evolving curriculum responds to the needs of the learners and their interests by reviewing and analysing the needs of the emerging cohorts.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), our aim is to provide a nurturing and stimulating environment that supports every child in working towards the EYFS goals. A key focus of our provision is Communication and Language, as strong speaking and listening skills are fundamental to children’s learning, confidence and future success. All learning is carefully planned to meet the individual needs and interests of each child, with a strong emphasis on hands-on, real-life experiences to deepen understanding and engagement. Our curriculum includes high-quality phonics, maths and Talk for Writing, alongside the explicit teaching of topic-related vocabulary to develop children’s language and comprehension. Each day is enriched with a wide range of songs and nursery rhymes, which support language development, rhythm, memory and enjoyment of learning in the early year
